What is SAMe?

dog_liver_72SAMe (S-adenosyl-methionine) is a liver support supplement with antioxidant and detoxifying properties.

We use it mainly in liver disease where blood tests show us that the liver enzymes are raised, indicating liver dysfunction. SAMe can help the enzymes levels normalize and the liver heal more quickly.

SAMe is naturally made by cells throughout the body and is formed from the amino acid methionine and a cellular energy substance called ATP. It is also found naturally in food sources like meat and sunflower seeds.

We supplement it because the levels in the body drop in liver disease.

Why recommend administration of SAMe to my pet?

The liver is the sponge of the body. All blood passes through it and toxins and impurities are taken out. The cells of the liver have a production line for making the toxins safe. Part of this process is taking a toxin molecule and adding a ‘methyl group’ to it. This is like putting a stick through the spokes of a moving bicycle – it stops the toxin.

This process 'methylation' relies on a constant stream of ‘methyl’ molecules to bung up toxins. When the liver is unhealthy, the supply dries up. SAMe, s-adenosylmethionine supplies them while the liver is sick.

Not only this, supplementing with SAMe protects liver cells from dying and helps them regenerate after a toxic insult.

How safe is SAMe?

sunflwrmeat_72SAMe is safe. There are no reported adverse side effects. These products are very well tolerated and have an exceptionally wide safety margin. SAMe should be used with caution in hyperexcitable animals, since it may heighten their mood further.

Where do I obtain SAMe and do I need a prescription?
